From Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve, it’s the eating season this time of year. As we jump from holiday party to holiday party, and enjoy feasts along the way, our waistbands grow right as we make New Year’s resolutions to maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight. One place to save on the calorie splurge this holiday season is in your cocktails.

The five great low-calorie cocktail recipes below will allow you to enjoy a delicious drink at a party without consuming too much sugar, and keeping the calorie intake down.

The Paloma

Yield: 1

Ingredients:

¼ cup tequila

¼ cup club soda

¼ cup fresh grapefruit juice

1 tbsp. fresh lime juice

1 tsp. sugar

Small plate with sugar and grapefruit wedge (for garnish)

Instructions:

1.Start with garnishing your class first. Pour the sugar over the plate and rub the rim of a rocks glass with the grapefruit wedge. Save the wedge. Flip the cup over and rub the rim of the glass in the sugar.

2.Pour the grapefruit juice, lime juice, and sugar into the rocks glass and stir the mixture until the sugar dissolves.

3.Add the tequila, club soda, and ice into the glass.

4.Garnish the glass with the grapefruit wedge.

Spicy Bloody Mary

Yield: 2

Ingredients:

4 oz. vodka

12 oz. tomato juice or v8

¼ to ½ tsp. wasabi

4-6 dashes sriracha

1 oz. lime juice

4 dashes Worcestershire sauce

2 pinches celery salt

Instructions:

1.Combine all of the ingredients into a pitcher and stir it well.

2.Strain the mixture into a glass that has ice.

3.Garnish with celery, spicy pickle, olive, deviled egg, or whatever else you like.

Grapefruit Greyhound

Yield: 2

Ingredients:

3 oz. vodka

6 oz. fresh grapefruit juice (about one grapefruit)

6 oz. club soda

Instructions:

1.Combine all of the ingredients, split across two glasses. Half in one glass, and half in the other glass, both with ice.

2.Stir well and serve.

Ginger Whiskey Sour

Yield: 1

Ginger Syrup Ingredients (mixture yield is 8 cocktails):

100 g fresh ginger, peeled and diced

1 cup honey

1 cup water

Ginger Syrup Instructions:

1.In a small sauce pan heat the ginger, honey, and water on low heat until it begins to boil.

2.Reduce the heat and simmer the mixture for about 20 minutes.

3.Remove it from the heat and let it cool completely before you use it.

4.Strain the syrup through a sieve and throw out the used ginger.

Cocktail Ingredients:

1 ½ oz. whiskey

1 oz. fresh lemon juice

1 oz. ginger syrup that you just made

2-3 dashes cherry bitters

Cocktail Instructions:

1.Combine the whiskey, syrup, and lemon juice in a shaker with ice.

2.Shake well until the shaker becomes cold.

3.Strain the cocktail into highball classes that have cups in them.

4.Top with a couple dashes of cherry bitters.
