Quick Facts: ABV: 45% (90 proof)  |  Origin: Franklin County, Kentucky, USA  |  No Age Statement (estimated 8–10 years)  |  Distillery: Buffalo Trace Distillery

Production & Heritage

Buffalo Trace Distillery, located on the banks of the Kentucky River in Frankfort, has been producing whiskey on the same site since 1773, making it one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the United States. The bourbon is built on Mashbill #1 — estimated at roughly 89.5% corn, 7% rye, and 3.5% malted barley — and undergoes sour mash fermentation before column still distillation. It matures in new charred American oak barrels inside warehouses where, since 1859, steam has been pumped during extreme winter cold to create additional aging cycles as the whiskey moves in and out of the wood — a technique Buffalo Trace pioneered. Despite carrying no official age statement, the bourbon is widely believed to rest for approximately eight to ten years before bottling.

Tasting Notes

Aroma: The nose opens with caramel and vanilla before ripe apple and pear notes emerge alongside light cinnamon spice. A subtle undercurrent of leather and charred oak adds depth without overpowering the sweeter top notes.

Taste: The entry is soft and approachable, led by brown sugar, honey, and a creamed-corn sweetness characteristic of high-corn mashbills. At mid-palate, baking spices — especially cinnamon — build alongside candied cherry and toffee. A whisper of milk chocolate rounds out the peak, keeping the profile balanced rather than one-dimensional.

Finish: Medium in length with a slightly dry close, driven by toasted oak and lingering spice. Vanilla resurfaces on the tail end, leaving a warm, gently sweet impression.

How to Drink Buffalo Trace

Neat or with a single ice cube is the simplest way to appreciate the interplay of caramel sweetness and rye spice; a few drops of water open up the fruit notes considerably. Buffalo Trace also holds its own in cocktails: an Old Fashioned, where its toffee and vanilla backbone stands up to bitters and sugar; a Whiskey Sour, where the brown-sugar sweetness balances citrus without turning thin; and a Boulevardier, where its baking-spice character complements the bittersweet profile of Campari and sweet vermouth.

  • Stocking a home bar with a versatile, critically acclaimed bourbon
  • Hosting cocktail nights where a reliable mixing bourbon is essential
  • Introducing someone to straight bourbon whiskey for the first time
  • Gifting a whiskey enthusiast a recognized and well-regarded Kentucky staple

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Buffalo Trace taste like? Buffalo Trace leads with caramel, vanilla, and brown sugar before baking spices like cinnamon emerge, finishing with toasted oak and a touch of dried fruit. The overall profile is sweet, balanced, and approachable.

How does Buffalo Trace compare to Maker's Mark? Maker's Mark uses a wheated mashbill (substituting wheat for rye), which typically produces a softer, rounder profile, while Buffalo Trace's rye content lends a noticeable spice note alongside its caramel sweetness. Both sit in a similar price tier, but the flavor profiles diverge meaningfully due to that grain difference.

Is Buffalo Trace good for beginners? Its 90-proof strength is manageable for newcomers, and the sweet, balanced flavor profile — heavy on caramel and vanilla with mild spice — makes it one of the most commonly recommended entry points into bourbon.

Where is Buffalo Trace made? Buffalo Trace is distilled at the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Franklin County, Kentucky. The distillery site has been in continuous operation since the late 18th century and is a designated National Historic Landmark.

What foods pair well with Buffalo Trace? Smoked brisket or pulled pork highlights the bourbon's oak and spice; dark chocolate truffles mirror its toffee and cocoa undertones; pecan pie echoes its brown-sugar sweetness; sharp aged cheddar provides a savory counterpoint; and grilled stone fruit such as peaches brings out the bourbon's candied fruit character.

What sizes does Buffalo Trace come in? Buffalo Trace is widely available in 750ml, 1L, and 1.75L bottles, with 375ml and 50ml miniatures also found in many markets.

Is Buffalo Trace worth the price? Buffalo Trace positions as an entry-level to mid-range bourbon that consistently punches above its price tier in competition — evidenced by its 2023 Double Gold in Denver and recurring Gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. For the quality and versatility it delivers, it is broadly considered one of the strongest values in American whiskey.

Why Buffalo Trace?

Few bourbons at this price point carry a résumé that includes Double Gold medals, a 96-point Liquid Gold rating from Jim Murray, and Gold after Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The distillery's proprietary steam-heating technique — in use since 1859 — gives the liquid additional aging cycles that contribute complexity beyond what the estimated eight-to-ten-year maturation alone would suggest. The 1L format offers meaningful extra volume over a standard 750ml bottle, making it practical for regular sipping and cocktail use alike. In a crowded bourbon market, Buffalo Trace remains a benchmark for what Kentucky straight bourbon can achieve without demanding an ultra-premium price.
