The best mint julep recipe for the Kentucky Derby
This upcoming weekend is the 141st Kentucky Derby, which is held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. There are many derbies throughout the season, but this is arguably the most popular, as it brings in international attention from people that are not otherwise into horse racing. And for those that are, the Kentucky Derby is seen as the official kickoff of the summer racing season. Regardless of which side you fall on, everyone can have fun with a cool mint julep in hand, the official drink of the Kentucky Derby.
Ingredients
2 oz bourbon
1 oz simple syrup
2 cups crushed ice
Fresh mint for garnish
Glass
Silver julep cup or highball glass
Directions
Add the simple syrup to the glass first, then 1 cup crushed ice, bourbon, and a splash of water. Add the remainder of the crushed ice to nearly fill glass. Mix well, stirring, and garnish with a sprig of mint.
